WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, a senior member of both the Senate Banking and Foreign Relations Committees, today questioned Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin during a Banking hearing on the Trump Administration’s missed deadline to levy sanctions that would impact Russian defense and intelligence sectors, as required by the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which Menendez co-authored.
Secretary Mnuchin first struggled to answer whether he agreed with the U.S. intelligence community’s assessment that Russia took actions to undermine our democratic process, then dodged Sen. Menendez’s questions by claiming yesterday’s deadline to impose additional sanctions only required the Trump Administration file a detailed report, not levy new sanctions against anyone who might be supporting Russia’s efforts.
“The law was pretty clear,” said Menendez. “It seemed to me not only did you have to describe these entities, but you also had to pursue sanctions.”
