WASHINGTON, DC - Earlier today, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) named Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) as the winner of their annual Humane Champion Award. Sen. Menendez was recognized for his leadership on the Horse Transportation Safety Act, S. 1459 and for his perfect score on HSUS' Humane Scorecard for 2013.

"It is a great honor to receive this recognition, especially since it is awarded by the undisputed leading voice in advocacy for laws to protect animals," said Sen. Menendez. "I look forward to continue our efforts to raise awareness on animal issues and finally putting an end to the inhumane and unsafe practice of transporting horses in double-decker trailers."

The Horse Transportation Safety Act of 2013, introduced by Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL), would prohibit the interstate transportation of horses in double-decker trailers and would create civil penalties for each horse transported. This legislation was presented on August 1, 2013 and is currently pending consideration by the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization. There are nearly half a million supporters in New Jersey and over 11 million nationwide. Established in 1954, The HSUS is one of America's most trusted voice against cruelty, exploitation and neglect and seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals.
