WASHINGTON – Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, applauded the Committee’s passage of S. Res. 236, a Senate resolution to reaffirm the U.S.-Tunisia partnership, and to publicly support Tunisia’s ongoing transition into a vibrant and stable democracy.
“I am very pleased to see this important resolution reaffirming the strong partnership between Tunisia and the United States pass unanimously through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.” said Senator Menendez. “ As Tunisians prepare for parliamentary elections on October 6 and prepare for a second round of Presidential elections, the Committee’s passage of this resolution reaffirms that support in Congress for Tunisian democracy and security remains strong and bipartisan.”
Tunisians ousted dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on January 14, 2011, and have since continued to reform their political system, adopting a new constitution in 2014 and holding new elections that same year. Tunisia recently held its second free and fair Presidential elections on September 15 and are set to hold its second free and fair Parliamentary elections on October 6.
