WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) today applauded the adoption of their bipartisan Senate Resolution declaring September 2019 as “National Prostate Awareness Month”. S.Res.321 is aimed at increasing awareness of prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in American men, except for skin cancer, and encourages all Americans to take part in efforts to increase early detection, improve treatment, and discover a cure for the disease.

“Prostate cancer is highly preventable and the U.S. has the highest rates of prostate cancer survival in the world,” said Sen. Menendez. “But early detection is key to survival. Congress has a responsibility to promote awareness and encourage men of all ages to speak to their providers about prostate health.”

“I know firsthand the need for early screenings and warnings when it comes to cancer,” said Sen. Crapo. “Checkups and testing for prostate cancer can save lives given that it is treatable if found early. Congress must use every avenue available, including through resolutions like these, to raise awareness of the risks and early detection screenings necessary to combat prostate cancer.”

The American Cancer Society estimates that 174,650 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed across the United States in 2019 – claiming the lives of approximately 31,620 men.

Joining Sens. Menendez and Crapo as original cosponsors of this Resolution were Senators Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Shelley Moore Capito (R. W.Va.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).
