"Maya Angelou was an American icon, whose poetry, prose and passion transcended race, gender, and culture and whose words will continue to inspire future generations. She was the epitome of perseverance and determination, who overcame personal tragedy and adversity to become a source of strength and a voice of the civil rights movement. While we are saddened by her passing, we celebrate her life and legacy."
