WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) issued the following statement after President Obama signed the Iran Nuclear Review Agreement Act of 2015 into law.
“This law will ensure that Congress has the final say in any agreement concluded with Iran,” said Senator Menendez. “The sanctions that I authored and the crippling economic pressure that ensued forced Iran to the negotiating table because of necessity, not choice. Congress must be the ultimate decision maker on any final sanctions relief, will oversee any agreement, and have the ability to snapback sanctions. Iran’s history of deception and defiance, their pursuit of illicit nuclear infrastructure and technology spanning decades is well documented. We must therefore demand a verifiable agreement that dismantles Iran’s nuclear weapons program for the long run. If this is a short term pause in their program that leaves Iran the ability to quickly restart its program, an already dangerous region will become all the more perilous. Any agreement must build in the ability to hold Iran to its commitments and prevent the nightmare of a nuclear Iran from ever being realized.”
