WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Senator Bob Menendez, the highest ranking Latino in the U.S. Congress, responded to President Trump’s tweet about Puerto Rico.
Earlier this week, when President Trump called his Puerto Rico response “an incredible, unsung success,” Menendez also responded, saying “I would not call nearly 3,000 dead Americans in Puerto Rico ‘an incredible, unsung success.’ I would call it the greatest Presidential failure in response to a natural disaster in modern history.”
In July, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) admitted their failures in the response to the devastation that Hurricane Maria caused in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, which Menendez lambasted.
New Jersey has the third largest population of Puerto Ricans living in the United States, and Menendez has a long history of fighting for equal treatment for Puerto Rico. Just since Hurricane Maria struck the island, Menendez has:
Demanded CFPB Nominee Kathy Kraninger provide a full accounting of her role overseeing the Administration’s response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and eventually Voted against Kathy Kraninger as the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau due to her role in the botched response
