Newark, N.J. - U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the most Senior Hispanic Member in Congress and Ranking Member of the Senate’sForeign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, issued the following statement regarding Hurricane Maria’s landfall on the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
“As Puerto Rico undergoes a crippling economic crisis, it is now staring down a second catastrophic hurricane in less than a month. To make matters worse, as Republicans gear up to once again try and take away healthcare from Americans on the mainland, the 3.4 million American citizens living on the island are facing a manmade crisis in the form of a looming Medicaid cliff that will only add to human suffering and exacerbate the impact of the storm. I will work arduously to ensure that our government does its part in mitigating the potentially disastrous effects and threat to life posed by Hurricane Maria to the people of Puerto Rico. No one should worry about losing his or her healthcare while staring down the eye of a natural cataclysm. My thoughts and prayers go out to the residents on the island and their families here in New Jersey.”
