WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) the Highest Ranking Latino in Congress led a bipartisan group of colleagues in introducing a Senate resolution to recognize the cultural and historical significance of the Cinco de Mayo – a holiday to commemorate Mexico’s victory over France during the Battle of Puebla in 1862, which resulted in Mexico’s freedom and independence.

“Mexican-Americans are a vital part of America. With their countless contributions generation after generation, they have enriched our culture, boosted the economy and have served on the frontlines protecting America’s freedom. Today we not only celebrate this historic event in Mexico’s history but also celebrate the vast contributions and achievements by Mexican-Americans to the betterment of our nation,” said Senator Menendez. “As a nation of immigrants, we must continue to celebrate the history of all communities living in the United States and strive for a more inclusive agenda that resembles the diversity of our great country by building bridges of hope instead of wasteful walls of hate.”

S.Res.187 recognizes the historic struggle of the people of Mexico for independence and freedom, which Cinco de Mayo commemorates, which serves as a reminder that the foundation of the United States was built by people from many countries and diverse cultures who were willing to fight and die for freedom.

Joining Sen. Menendez in cosponsoring this resolution were Senators John Cornyn, John (R-Texas), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), Kamala Harris (D-CA), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Martha McSally (R-Ariz.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Krysten Sinema (D-Ariz.), Tina Smith (D-M.N.).
