NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker today announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded $3,277,085 to support the Head Start program at The Children’s Home Society of New Jersey in Mercer County.
“Regardless of a child’s zip code or the circumstances they are born into, they deserve easy access to quality, affordable early childhood education in order for them to grow and reach their full potential in both school and beyond.” said Sen. Menendez “This federal investment in Head Start is vital because this program makes a long lasting difference in the lives of children throughout New Jersey and across the country.”
“Quality early education programs like Head Start are the key to cultivating the skills children need to ensure future success,” said Sen. Booker. “In New Jersey, Head Start programs provide our youngest students with opportunities to create, learn, and explore. This federal funding will give students the tools they need to reach their full potential and succeed well into the future.”
The Children’s Home Society of New Jersey Head Start/Early Head Start Program provides care to nearly 300 children from birth to age five in a center based program option. They also provide intensive support for expectant mothers as they prepare for the birth of their child.
Both Head Start and Early Head Start provide comprehensive child development programs for low-income children, from birth to age five, and their families. The program has been shown to improve educational outcomes for participating students, including by increasing rates of high school graduation and college attendance. Community organizations are awarded grants to provide Head Start services in their community through HHS.
