WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker today announced that a combined $34.1 million in grants have been awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Continuum of Care Program to support hundreds of permanent and transitional housing programs for homeless individuals and families, and to support homelessness prevention programs in New Jersey.
“It is crucial that we continue to honor our commitment to ending homelessness by supporting local programs and services,” said Sen. Menendez. “This federal funding will help increase access to safe and reliable housing for thousands of homeless men, women and children across New Jersey and provide them the services and stability they need to get back on their feet and improve their lives.”
“As a nation, we have a commitment to extending a hand to our brothers and sisters who need it most by helping ensure they have the decency of a roof over their head,” said Sen. Booker. "These federal funds provide much needed assistance to our most vulnerable populations by supporting the organizations on the front lines in the battle against homelessness in New Jersey."
There are an estimated 13,900 homeless men, women and children throughout the state, according to the New Jersey Coalition to End Homelessness. This grant will help ensure local agencies and programs can continue to provide the necessary services to help those struggling with homelessness.
The Continuum of Care Program is one of HUD’s core initiatives that works to combat homelessness and guide individuals as they obtain housing and begin a new chapter. President Obama has called for $11 billion in his FY 2017 budget to be spent over the coming decade on initiatives to prevent family homelessness.
According to the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, (USICH) a group of 19 federal agencies and offices, chronic homelessness has declined by 22% since 2010.
