NEWARK, NJ – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-NJ) today announced $158,700 in federal funding to help homeless veterans in Camden find supportive services and a place to call home. The grant is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program.

“This funding will help veterans in Camden who have become homeless receive the shelter, services, and support they need and deserve,” said Sen. Menendez. “Veterans’ homelessness is a problem across our country, and no one who has served our nation should find themselves living on the streets. I am grateful for this funding that will help vets in New Jersey find a place to call home.”

“It is tragic that so many of our veterans find themselves with the challenge of being homeless,” said Sen. Booker. “We must invest in ensuring our veterans have access to affordable housing and a good quality of life. New Jersey's courageous veterans and their families deserve our support and I am committed to helping those who've served our country in uniform.”

This New Jersey funding will go to the Camden Housing Authority. The HUD-VASH program, which began in 2008, awards funding based on demonstrated need in communities with high numbers of homeless veterans, and works with local housing authorities and VA facilities to provide permanent housing and case management and clinical assistance. Veterans participating in the HUD-VASH program rent privately-owned housing and generally contribute no more than 30 percent of their income toward rent.
