Most of the people sitting around the table in corporate boardrooms are white and male, according to an annual diversity survey released by U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez.

According to the survey, only 23 percent of directors are women and 18 percent are minorities, In the first survey conducted in 2011, women accounted for 21 percent of directors and minorities 17 percent.

Among senior executives, the new survey said, 70 percent were white men.

"Consider this a wake-up call, corporate America," said Menendez (D-N.J.). "It is unacceptable that while you're reaping record profits by marketing goods and services to communities of color, women and minorities are sorely underrepresented on your boards and executive teams, and as your suppliers."
