U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J,, commended Essex County Sheriff's Capt. Peter Corbo's weaponry skills.

“He’s a good shot,” Menendez observed Monday at the Essex County Police Academy in Cedar Grove, “but you don’t have to be a good shot with a AR-15.”

“These military-style weapons and their capacity magazines don’t belong on our streets,” Menendez said after the firearms demonstration.

“We have the Second Amendment, but no privilege or right under the U.S. Constitution is unlimited,” the senator maintained. “You can’t go with the First Amendment right into a movie theater and get your kicks by saying, ‘Fire, fire,’ and getting everybody to rush out.”

“You can have a Second Amendment right, but not a Second Amendment right to an AR-15,” the senator contended. AR-15s are military-style assault weapons and have no purpose for civilians to use them, he said.

Menendez advocated legislation he has authored that would ban high-capacity magazines.

“High-capacity magazines are for one thing only: high-capacity kills,” he said. “You don’t go hunting for a deer and shoot 50 rounds.”
