The waters of New Jersey's 180 ocean beaches and 35 back beach bays are tested once a week with technology from last century, and two politicians are aiming to change that.

The legislation, called The BEACH Act, would reauthorize an annual $30 million federal grant program for the next four years to monitor beach quality and notify the public of any health hazards, a statement from Menendez's office said.

"The BEACH Act allows families to come to the beach with the peace of mind knowing that the water is safe for them and their children to swim and play," he said.
