State Superior Court Judge Brian R. Martinotti, a former Cliffside Park council member whose wife has been on the council for more than a decade, was nominated Thursday to be a United States District Court judge by President Obama.

Martinotti has been a civil court judge in Bergen County since 2002, and presides over special environmental, affordable housing and family law dockets, according to the White House. His wife, Dana Martinotti, has been a council member since 2001.

“I know Brian Martinotti to be an exceptionally capable jurist who presides with an abiding commitment to integrity and justice,” said Sen. Cory Booker, a Democrat from Newark.

Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat from Paramus, said he wholeheartedly endorsed the nomination and urged the Senate to confirm him. Democrats have complained that the Senate has considered only a handful of judicial nominations since Republicans took control of the chamber this year, but the Judiciary Committee took up several nominations this week that were made in early February.
