U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez again will try to convince Congress to recognize suffragist Alice Paul with the legislative body’s highest honor.

Menendez introduced legislation last week to posthumously award Paul the Congressional Gold Medal. It marked the fifth time that the Democratic senator has sponsored a bill to award Paul the medal, considered “the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions,” according to the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Past recipients of the medal include George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant, the Wright brothers, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa and John Wayne.

“Alice Paul’s inspiring legacy reverberates far behind the borders of our home state — she inspired a nation and brought about revolutionary changes for the women around the world,” Menendez said in a statement. “I believe a Congressional Gold Medal to be a fitting honor for the person who stood tall for women’s rights her whole life.”
