Let's start with a simple question: Do you consider your mother or father or, if you have children, your son or daughter, to be an “extended” family member?

Senator Menendez went on to explain the law. “Americans need to know that when Republicans speak of ending ‘chain migration’ they are talking about ending the legal right of United States Citizens to legally sponsor family members in our immigration system,” he said. “They don’t want to call it family reunification because they don’t want to own up to their intention, which is to strip U.S. citizens of the right to sponsor their brother and sister and father and mother and adult children as immigrants.”

Despite what many see as a major setback for Dreamers in the U.S. Senate on February 15, the debate on immigration will continue in America. As is it moves forward, we should remember Senator Robert Menendez's words: “There’s nothing threatening about uniting mothers and fathers. And there’s nothing more common sense than uniting brothers and sisters and sons and daughters.”
