In addition to the glitz and pearls, the Academy Awards became a big night for progressive issues, with actors using their podium to highlight equal pay, voting rights, and privacy. Several Washington lawmakers took to Twitter to cheer on Hollywood’s winners and their comments.
In her acceptance speech for best supporting actress, Patricia Arquette called for equal pay for women, ending her speech: “to every woman who gave birth to every tax payer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights, it’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United State of America.
She was cheered by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.), Sen. Robert Menendez (D., N.J.) and chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee Debbie Wasserman Schultz, among others.
