“NATO is a critical part of our security infrastructure, and at the same time it has created prosperity that we have been part of enjoying in a significant market for the United States products and services.”

WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, went on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to discuss President Trump’s travel to Europe, where he is attending a NATO Summit in Brussels and meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

“Sanctions against Russia is not a question of discretion for the President. When we wrote CAATSA, the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, it was the first time in all the sanctions I've helped author, whether it be against Iran or in this case against Russia, that the congress did not provide the discretion to an American president and insisted on mandatory sanctions if certain actions by Russia were taken,” Menendez said. “Those sanctions can only be undone by the senate.”
