Menendez comes to the aid of dying NJ woman, helps to secure kidney donor’s travel to US for lifesaving surgery

BARRINGTON, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez today held a news conference with Nina Saria and her family to provide an update on the New Jersey mother who had once found a kidney donor on Craigslist only to have that lifesaving surgery cancelled at the last minute.

Ms. Saria, of Egg Harbor City, found a near-perfect match in her mother, Nana Gulua, but the U.S. State Department refused several times to allow Ms. Gulua to travel to the United States from the Republic of Georgia to save her daughter’s life.

After Ms. Saria reached out to Sen. Menendez for help, he was able to help secure humanitarian parole through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to allow Ms. Gulua to travel to the U.S. for the surgery.  The transplant surgery was successfully completed on Dec. 1, 2016.  Ms. Saria and Ms. Gulua are recovering.

Joining the senator at today’s news conference were: Ms. Saria, her husband Kay and eight-year-old son Nicholas, and Ms. Gulua.
