VIDEO: Menendez Questions Tillerson on Building a Wall along the Mexican Border and Trump’s Degrading Comments about Immigrants

“Mr. Tillerson, do you think Mexicans are criminals, drug dealers, and rapists?” “…somehow it seems we are conducting foreign policy by tweets these days.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a leader on immigrant’s rights, today questioned Secretary of State-designee Rex Tillerson during his confirmation hearing about President-Elect Trump’s promise to make Mexico pay to build a Berlin-style wall along our southern border, and his past degrading comments about Mexican immigrants.

The president-elect has repeatedly insulted immigrants, saying for example, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best...They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”

Senator Menendez asked, “Mr. Tillerson, do you think Mexicans are criminals, drug dealers, and rapists? Do you think that those comments help our relationship with Mexico, our third largest trading partner, a trading partner that represents $583 billion in trade of goods and services, including our second largest goods export market in 2015, and 15.7% of our overall exports in 2015? That doesn’t help your job as Secretary of State, does it?”

Mr. Tillerson simply replied that “I would never characterize an entire population of people with any single term at all.”
