Statement from Sen. Menendez on the Presidential Elections in Honduras

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, issued the following statement on the indecision around las week’s presidential elections in Honduras.

“Last Sunday the world watched as millions of Hondurans dutifully participated in a democratic process to elect the next leader of their country, casting votes throughout the country. Over the last few years Honduras has made great strides to strengthen its democratic institutions and rebuild the trust of the Honduran people. I join others in expressing concern about the slow pace and lack of transparency coming from the Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal, recognizing the importance of executing due diligence in counting ballots.

“Successful democracies promote transparency and earn the trust of their electorate, and with that in mind I encourage Honduran officials to uphold their commitments to a transparent and democratic process. Given the seemingly close margin of victory emerging between the two leading candidates, I also encourage patience and for both candidates to commit to allowing the process to fully conclude and to respect the will of the Honduran people.”
