NEWARK, NJ - U.S. Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker (both D-NJ) today announced that NJ Transit will receive $2,615,000 from the Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration to implement bus rapid transit in Winslow Township, Camden County, NJ.

"This grant will provide NJ Transit the necessary funds to modernize its bus system in Camden County, making significant improvements to New Jerseyans' commutes" said Senator Menendez. "As chair of the Senate's transit subcommittee, I will continue to advocate for the enhancement of New Jersey's transit infrastructure by fighting for these important federal investments."

"Investments to New Jersey's transit system are absolutely vital to ensuring our state's continued economic expansion," said Senator Booker. "I am committed to advocating for federal resources to continue funding necessary improvements to our transportation infrastructure, especially the buses New Jerseyans heavily rely on."

This project is part of the Bus Livability Initiative announced in August 2012, and funds will be used for the South Jersey Bus Livability improvement project which entails:

  • Improvements at the Avandale Park/Ride, located in Winslow Township, NJ with project scope that includes the expansion of the facility
  • Resurfacing and restriping of the existing lot
  • Lighting improvements
  • Improving bus shelter/boarding area
  • Installing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and ITS signage

As chair of the Senate Banking subcommittee with jurisdiction over public transportation, Senator Menendez and his staff worked closely with NJ Transit on their applications for the funds and he advocated on behalf of the investment to ensure it received due consideration.
