Senators Menendez, Reid, and Cornyn Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Introduce resolution to honor contributions of Hispanic Americans

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced a resolution today recognizing September 15 - October 15, 2013 as Hispanic Heritage Month. The resolution celebrates the heritage and culture of Hispanic Americans and honors the immense contributions of Latinos to the United States. The resolution was approved by the Senate by Unanimous Consent.

Senator Menendez said: "Latinos and the heritage of Latinos play an integral role in the economy, culture, and identity of the United States. As Chairman of the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, I am thrilled to introduce once again a resolution to honor their countless contributions to strengthen and enrich New Jersey and our great nation. As America's fastest growing minority, Hispanic Americans harbor a deep commitment to family and community, an enduring work ethic, and a perseverance to succeed and contribute to our society. This year, as we commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the growing influence of Latinos in our nation and we recognize the critical work that the Hispanic community continues to do to help move forward the process of passing comprehensive immigration reform. I will continue to ensure the needs and concerns of Latino families and communities are represented in Congress."

Senator Reid said: "I am honored to join this month over 52 million Latinos in Nevada and across the country in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. For centuries, the Hispanic community has contributed to our country's progress. Nevada's noticeable Hispanic influence is evident in both the name of our state and our most famous city, Las Vegas. This month should be one to celebrate, but also one to reflect on what we can do as policy makers to meet the needs of the Latino community," Said Reid. "This year we were successful in passing a bipartisan immigration bill in the Senate and we should keep pushing Republicans in the House of Representatives to do their job, as the Senate did. Millions of Hispanic immigrant families deserve a vote on a bill with a path to citizenship. What better way to celebrate this important month than to pass a bill that would allow millions of families to stay together and reach their full potential? I celebrate with Latinos in Nevada and across the country and I reaffirm my commitment to supporting the Latino community through my work in the Senate."

Senator Cornyn said: "From the earliest days of Texas' history, Hispanic trailblazers have helped to shape our state's rich heritage. Hispanic Americans have contributed in countless ways to the Texas identity - through education, business and the arts to military and public service and every facet of our society. I am proud to represent the second-largest Hispanic population in the country and pleased to join my colleagues in introducing this resolution to pay tribute to the millions of Hispanic Americans who have helped make America the greatest nation on earth."
