WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Jeff Chiesa (R-NJ) today announced s grant award from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program totaling $218,538 for the Brigantine Fire Department.

The grant application was written by Fire Chief James Holl, who died unexpectedly on June 2. The funds will be used to help the department purchase portable radios and provide training for the department's firefighters.

"By all accounts, Fire Chief Holl was a dedicated fireman, veteran and family man who is dearly missed by the city he served. This AFG grant that he obtained is a fitting tribute to his dedication to making sure that Brigantine's firefighters have the equipment and training they need to do their jobs as safely and effectively as possible," said Senator Menendez. "Chief Holl is a perfect example of why our firefighters deserve nothing less than our best efforts to help them obtain the training and equipment they need. That's the objective of the AFG program, and why I am committed to fighting for this program on behalf of our firefighters who protect our communities."

"This is an especially fitting tribute to the legacy of Chief Holl, and hallmark of his dedication to making certain his department was prepared for emergencies. In times of crisis, every family wants to believe our first responders will have the best tools and knowledge to meet each emergency. Chief Holl understood the critical role of preparedness and I commend FEMA for approving this award for the Brigantine Fire Department," said Senator Chiesa.

Captain Joseph Maguire of the Brigantine Fire Department expressed the city's gratitude for the grant.

"The Brigantine Fire Department is appreciative of the support that we get through the Fire Act and the federal government assisting us with completing our mission of protecting the lives and property in the City of Brigantine," said Captain Maguire. "It's heartwarming to know that work that was initiated by Chief Holl is now able to come to fruition and benefit the department and the city."

The AFG program provides funding to enhance response capabilities, as well as to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel. These grants can be invested in training, protective equipment, fitness programs, modifications to facilities, and supplies that support firefighting operations and safety.
