Washington - US Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), whom last year co-authored a unanimously agreed to resolution recognizing the religious and historical significance of Diwali, today released the following statement in recognition of this year's Festival of Lights:

"Today, I am proud to join millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains in New Jersey and around the world in celebrating Diwali, the Festival of Lights. As Diwali observers illuminate lamps across the globe, we are reminded that this festival celebrates universal values: that the light of knowledge should overwhelm the darkness of ignorance; that good deeds and compassion for our common man are needed today and everyday.

"So today, in the spirit of the Festival of Diwali, let us all take a moment to pause and reflect on our common humanity that transcends borders, nationalities, and cultures. And let us also celebrate India's great history and people with whom we have shared democratic values that allow our countries to work together to reach common goals for a common good.

"My best wishes to those joining in prayer and celebration in India and around the world."
