Senator Menendez Applauds Court Decision Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage in New Jersey

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) today applauded the State Superior Court decision legalizing same sex marriage in New Jersey. The decision by Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson says New Jersey's prohibition on same-sex marriage has been denying couples federal benefits and thus violating the state's Constitution.

"Today's decision is a critical step forward for equal rights in our state," said Senator Menendez, who previous signed a letter urging New Jersey state legislators to support a marriage equality bill. "I am thrilled this court decision now brings us closer to fulfilling our nation's promise of equality and I urge our Governor and State Attorney General to accept this ruling and finally give same-sex couples in New Jersey the equal rights they deserve.

He added: "This decision by New Jersey's Superior Court, along with the Supreme Court decision a few months ago in favor of marriage equality, affirms what we already know: Every person should receive equal treatment no matter who they love."
