Sen. Menendez Statement on Passing of Shimon Peres

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Bob Menendez today issued the following statement on the passing of Shimon Peres, twice Prime Minister of Israel and Nobel peace prize laureate.

“Today, the world mourns the passing of a great man who lived long and embodied the essence of leadership, a man for his times whose qualities of projecting strength when required, and compassion in victory will always be his legacy and lesson to the people of Israel and the world. On the occasions of our meetings, including as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I had the pleasure to see his strength and compassion first-hand.

“His life through war and peace may be summed up in the view he expressed when he said: ‘Israel welcomes the wind of change, and sees a window of opportunity. Israel does not want to be an island of affluence in an ocean of poverty. Improvements in our neighbors' lives mean improvements to the neighborhood in which we live.’ He was a great man and a great leader who knew war and he knew peace and understood the burdens of both for his people.

“Today we join the world in mourning his death and offering our thoughts and prayers to his family and to the people of Israel.”
