Sen. Menendez on the Retirement of Rep. Luis Gutierrez

Sen. Menendez on the Retirement of Rep. Luis Gutierrez

Washington, D.C. – Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the highest ranking Latino in the U.S. Congress, issued the following statement on the retirement of Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.).

“Luis Gutierrez is not only the fearless and passionate voice for anyone in search of the American dream in this country, he has become the conscience of Congress on issues of equality, justice, and fairness.  He has the fundamental values and drive Americans should expect from their elected officials and is a tireless worker who embodies the contributions of Hispanic-Americans to the betterment of our nation.

“As he retires from Congress, I wish him and his family the very best in this new chapter. It has been an honor and a privilege to have worked with a man of such great conviction and such a good ally as Luis Gutierrez. His 24 years of leadership in Congress have been nothing short of extraordinary, and his absence will be sorely felt by many. On a personal note, I will dearly miss his trusted advice, tough negotiating skills, and dependable friendship.

“At a time of heightened fear and uncertainty for millions in our country, Congressman Gutierrez’s legacy will serve as a constant guidepost to all those fighting for immigrant rights and beyond. I have a feeling that retirement will not mean that he will not remain incredibly active in the community and I’m confident he will keep blazing the trail for Puerto Ricans, Latinos and all freedom fighters alike.”
