WASHINGTON, DC – In recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) released the following statement:

“Today, I join New Jerseyans and all Americans in honoring and celebrating the life, message and spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an American hero who marched our nation on a path towards a more tolerant land united by common values and common concerns.

“At a time when the issue of race relations in America is in the headlines once again, we are reminded that, though Dr. King gave his life for Civil Rights, he also gave his heart and his soul to a deep and abiding belief in the power of community service, mutual respect, and tolerance. That is what we should celebrate today.

“As a testament to Dr. King’s exceptional service to our nation, let us pledge to heal by embodying his values to bridge remaining differences in our society, and re-committing to never turn back the clock on the progress made in the past four-and-a-half decades. Let us carry Dr. King’s legacy by making this a year of reconciliation and healing for our nation.”
