Menendez: We Cannot Let Fear Control Us

Menendez Speaks about Syrian Refugees, ISIS & the Response to the Paris Attacks

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) today spoke with Jose Diaz-Balart on MSNBC about the United States’ response to the Paris attacks and current legislative proposals that would prevent any Syrian national seeking refuge in our country. Menendez stresses how Syrian refugees are more stringently screened and vetted than any other group allowed to enter our country and that we cannot allow fear to guide our policy decisions. He also outlined a series of steps Congress should take to keep Americans safe from ISIS terrorists, including closing the Terrorist Gun loophole and fixing the Visa Waiver Program.

He said: “We have a history in the past of ‘fear overcomes us.’ We turned away Jews at one time fearing that they were left-wing communists, we put Japanese people in encampments – we cannot let that fear control us... Do we have to have the highest level of scrutiny and security when it comes to refugees? Yes, but we can’t let refugees be the end all and be all about security.”
