Menendez: Terror Plot Reiterates Importance Of Homeland Security

Senator: We must not forget the need to protect our transit systems, our seaports, our chemical plants from possible attacks.

Washington - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) released a statement following news reports of an alleged terror plot targeting flights between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Today's report of a terror plot that would have possibly killed hundreds of Americans and people from around the globe is yet another reminder of the need to be vigilant and consistent in our efforts to secure our homeland.

We owe the British security forces who thwarted this plot a debt of gratitude, and they should be commended for their work in apparently stopping these attacks before they occurred. It is important that we continue to work with our allies around the globe, coordinating information to secure our nation and the world from those who seek to attack innocent victims on American soil or abroad.

And although this plot again focuses on our airlines, as the terrorists did on that fateful day nearly five years ago, we must not forget the need to protect our transit systems, our seaports, our chemical plants from possible attacks. I will continue to fight to implement security measures at each of these sites that ensure we are better prepared, just as I will continue to fight for my legislation to implement every one of the 9/11 Commissions recommendations.
