Menendez Statement on Vote to Override President’s Veto of Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement on the Senate’s vote to override the President’s veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, of which he is an original cosponsor:

“Today, families and victims of terrorism came one step closer to holding the perpetrators of terrorism accountable. For too long, legal hurdles had kept the courthouse doors closed to some victims and families pursuing cases against the backers and funders of terrorist attacks. But with this bipartisan vote, the families and victims will finally have their day in court and get the answers they deserve.

“As the Senator from the state with the second most victims on September 11th, I have and will always look for opportunities to help victims of terrorism seeking justice. I am proud that the 9/11 families and victims never stopped pushing for this important law.

“No law is perfect, and I will continue to monitor the implementation of this law to ensure that our nation’s troops, foreign service officers, and other personnel are not retaliated against.”

Senator Menendez is also the sponsor of the American Victims of Terrorism Justice Act, which extends the statute of limitations for civil actions regarding terrorist acts.
