Menendez Statement on the Tragic Shootings of Police Officers and Bystanders in Dallas

NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez today released the following statement in response to the fatal shooting of five Dallas police officers and wounding of others:

“We are all heartbroken over the horrific and senseless attack in Dallas.  Such a cowardly and craven attack on the men and women who protect our communities is an attack on each and every one of us.  I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of those affected and hope that those who remain injured quickly recover.  The deaths of these valiant police officers remind us of the risk they take every day, including in protecting us as we exercise our First Amendment rights

“This is a time not for anger and rage, but reflection—time for a national soul-searching, an objective assessment of who we are and what we want and expect life in a tolerant, just, and free America to be.  We cannot allow our children, black or white, to see Baton Rouge, St. Paul, Dallas and other tragedies as normal.  We cannot let these incidents become a template for anger, fear, and the tearing of our social consciousness.  This nation must heal these wounds that divide and come together for the good of our communities, of our children, and the betterment of our souls.”
