WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) today issued the following statement upon news of the passing of his dear colleague, Congressman Elijah Cummings:

“My heart aches today as we mourn the loss of a true civil rights champion and statesman. I had the honor of serving with Elijah Cummings in the House of Representatives and working with him on important legislation to improve the lives of all Americans. He was a dedicated and passionate public servant who fought his entire career for justice and equality under the law. He was the epitome of putting country first, provided moral leadership and clarity at critical times, and was a loud and resonating voice for the voiceless in our society. His loss is truly profound. My sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to the Cummings family, the people of Baltimore he proudly served and all those who he’s inspired over his storied life.”
