Menendez Statement on the Passage of Legislation to Address the National Opioid Epidemic

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez today released the following statement upon Senate passage of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), which he cosponsored:

“We need to do whatever we can to address this national opioid addiction epidemic that continues to grip and devastate New Jersey families.  Addiction to heroin and prescription opioids has negatively impacted countless families and cost too many lives not to act.

“This important legislation will make naloxone more widely available to law enforcement agencies and other first responders to help prevent overdoses and save lives.  It creates an evidence-based opioid and heroin treatment and interventions program and sets national treatment standards.  It provides resources to states to better monitor prescription drug use and expand disposal sites for unwanted prescription drugs to keep them out of the hands of children.

“This bill is a step in the right direction towards tackling opioid addiction and I will continue to fight for additional funding to expand treatment options.”
