Menendez Statement on Senate Republican Passage of Republican Tax Scheme Not One Republican Senator Could Have Read

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez released the below statement following final passage by Republicans of a nearly 500 page tax bill that was delivered to members merely hours before they voted on it.  Sen. Menendez spent the week fighting against the elimination of the State and Local Tax Deduction (SALT), and tonight offered a common sense measure that would re-instate the deduction should state and local investments in Medicaid and other healthcare, infrastructure, services for children or seniors, education or law enforcement be cut, or if taxes on the middle class are increased.  It failed along party lines with no Republican support.

“There you have it. At 1:47 AM, Senate Republicans sold out working people, students, seniors, millennials, and millions of middle class families, particularly in successful states like New Jersey.   And for what?  To hand big, fat permanent tax breaks to powerful special interests and multinational corporations.  Let’s be clear:  The only people who’ll come out on top under the GOP’s tax scam are already sitting up there.

“I hope to God that Senate Republicans go home this weekend and take a good hard look at the people who sent them to Washington.  The people they promised to look out for.  Because those are exactly the people who will be hurt the most.”

In the week leading up to the vote, Senator Menendez took to Facebook Live to explain the tax bill, responded to Senator Pat Toomey’s attack on states like New Jersey and New York, detailed how the bill specifically hurts New Jersey, and offered measures to restore the state and local tax deduction New Jersey’s middle class relies on.
