Menendez Statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

NEWARK, N.J.. — Today, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), released the following statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

“Today, I join New Jerseyans and all Americans in honoring and celebrating the life, message and spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an American hero who marched our nation on a path towards a more tolerant land united by common values and common concerns.

“To say we are living through some extraordinary times in our country doesn’t quite do it justice. But I believe that it is exactly in these times of uncertainty and turbulence that the words of Dr. King carry the most resonance. For within the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we find guidance that remains just as relevant today as it was at the height of the civil rights movement.

“In this time of alternative facts, misinformation, and even blatant lies, we lean on Dr. King’s call to ‘become tough-minded enough to break loose from the shackles of prejudice, half-truths, and downright ignorance.’  His convictions guided his actions, and his legacy endures in our collective demand for truth and justice.

“As we celebrate Dr. King’s legacy today, let’s each one of us be stars lighting the way through the darkness and leading our country toward a future bright with freedom, prosperity, justice, and opportunity for all.”
