Menendez Statement on Enhanced Ebola Screenings at Newark Liberty International Airport

NEWARK, NJ - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, who this evening is arriving on a flight to Newark Liberty International Airport, released the following statement regarding the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announcement today of increased health screenings at five major airports, including Newark:

"I am encouraged that the CDC and cooperating agencies are taking prudent steps in the public's best interest. We need to make sure they have the necessary resources to do their jobs and further protect the health and safety of all Americans.

"Increasing health screenings for those passengers, who have recently been in the affected African countries and are entering the U.S. through our nation's busiest and largest international airports, including Newark, is an appropriate step to help ensure those infected are properly isolated and treated and public health risks are minimized. Today's announcement should bring us comfort, not concern.

"Entry screening is only one part of the puzzle. We also need to continue and increase efforts to address the epidemic in West Africa by providing assistance and expertise to fight this disease and prevent it from spreading to new regions and countries."
