Menendez Statement on Black History Month

Menendez Statement on Black History Month

NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez today released the following statement to mark the start of Black History Month.

“Our country is more free, our laws more just, our union more perfect because of African Americans who throughout our history beckoned our nation to live up to our highest ideals. This is a special time to celebrate the countless ways that African American leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians and everyday citizens have transformed our country for the better, empowered our citizens, and aided in creating a more diverse and thriving America.

“This month, as we rejoice in how far we’ve come since the days of slavery and Jim Crow, let us also remember that the fight for freedom, equal rights and justice is far from over. All of us stand on the shoulders of the abolitionists and civil rights giants who came before us and the best way we can honor their storied legacy is to continue advancing America’s long march toward equality, justice, and opportunity for all.”

Later this month Sen. Menendez will celebrate his annual “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants” Black History Month Celebration with events in North and South Jersey.
