Menendez Statement on Bipartisan Russia, Iran, North Korea Sanctions Agreement

NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), senior member of Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement regarding the bipartisan agreement on Russia, Iran, and North Korea sanctions legislation:

“While I believe the House should have taken up the strong Iran and Russia sanctions bill the Senate overwhelming passed with bipartisan support, I am pleased to see the Congress work as a whole to hold Iran, Russia, and North Korea accountable for their continued destabilizing activities across the world.

“As we have debated this bill, Iran continues its support of terrorism, Russia continues to violate the international order, and North Korea has continued belligerent actions.

“It is unfortunate that some of our colleagues sought to weaken the bill at the behest of special interests, but I believe this final product sends a clear message that when our interests, our allies, or our national security itself is threatened, the United States will take meaningful action. We will target those who seek to harm us and stand in support of our friends and allies, and work closely with them to confront mutual threats.

“Finally, this bill sends a clear message to the President that Congress is prepared to act with a united voice. I urge swift passage of this legislation from the full Congress and  expeditious signature from the President.”
