Washington - Upon word that Marine Sgt. Bill Cahir - a former Congressional staffer, correspondent for Newhouse Newspapers and Congressional candidate - was killed serving his country in Afghanistan, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) released the following statement:

"Sgt. Bill Cahir was a shining example of what makes ours the greatest and proudest nation in the world. He had a deep desire to serve his country, and he did so as a Congressional aide, with a reporter's notebook, with aspirations to represent his community in government and on the front lines of the battle against extremists who would do us harm. I knew Bill best from his days covering the New Jersey Congressional delegation. He was well-respected and dedicated to insightful and trust-worthy journalism. More than that, he was a good man. I honor Bill for his service to our nation and will always remember him as a human example of the greatness of the United States of America. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, particularly his wife and his daughters who will soon be born. I hope they will grow to understand what a fine man their father was."
