Menendez Statement Celebrating Greek Independence Day

WASHINGTON – Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement marking Greek Independence Day:

“I am proud to join people of Greek descent in New Jersey, the United States and all over the world in celebrating Greek Independence day and a democracy that dates back centuries.

“Our nation’s representative democracy was heavily influenced and shaped by the political experience and philosophy of ancient Greece, and the continuing contributions of Greek-Americans to the culture, science, politics, and economics of the United States remain an indispensable part of our national fabric today.

“As the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I extend my best wishes to the people of the Hellenic Republic in support of democratic governance and reiterate my commitment to continue working to protect and promote our nation’s invaluable relationship with Greece.”

A champion in Congress for the Greek-American community, Senator Menendez recently introduced a Senate Resolution (S.Res.95) honoring the 198th anniversary of Greek Independence Day and celebrating the traditions of cooperation and friendship that continue to remain strong between the United States and Greece.
