Menendez Renews Commitment To Stem Cell Research

Pledges more determination than ever

Washington - U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) released a statement reiterating his support for the hope and promise offered by stem cell research. On the fifth anniversary of Bushs ban on further federal funding for stem cell research, Menendez again expressed his full commitment to fighting for this potentially life saving research.

Five years ago, President Bush placed a ban on federal funding for new stem cell research. In those five years, I have heard time and again the desperation and hope of millions of Americans who pray for a change in policy so that scientists have the resources they need to potentially save millions of lives.

Those with loved ones suffering from Alzheimers, Parkinsons or juvenile diabetes waited in hope that their prayers would be answered and cures will be found in their lifetime. Across America, families in which a child or a parent was paralyzed from a traumatic accident held out hope that we would do the right thing and give their loved ones back the life they knew before their injury.

When we received the heart-breaking news that President Bush vetoed the Senate bill that would have given these families hope, Democrats pledged not to let their voices be silenced. Bushs grave mistake to veto the bill was not the end of this fight, but has merely fueled the fire of our determination. We will keep fighting until these millions of Americans see their hopes and prayers answered.
