WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, marked World Press Freedom Day by recognizing that a free press is essential to free and open societies.
"Press freedom is the hallmark of an open society and on this World Press Freedom Day, we in the United States and in nations throughout the world must ensure the protection of these rights to promote democracy and good governance," said Menendez.
In recognition of World Press Freedom Day, Senator Menendez plans to introduce a Senate resolution recognizing the threats to press freedom, commending journalists for the essential role they play in strengthening civil society, paying tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, and affirming press freedom as a central tenet of good governance at home and abroad.
Menendez co-sponsored a similar resolution in 2009.
Today marks the 20th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day which was first established by the United Nations General Assembly.
