Menendez on Trump’s Administration Proposal to Detain Children Indefinitely

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s proposal to circumvent court limits and detain immigrant children indefinitely:

“The Flores Settlement is not a loophole. This agreement was the result of over a decade of litigation, resulting in an agreement focused on protecting children from prison-like conditions. This proposal shows the Administration is doubling down on indefinite detention of immigrant children and families, a cruel and inhumane policy.

“Indefinite detention of mothers and children is not the solution to the trauma caused by family separation of families legitimately seeking asylum.  The harm caused by such a policy is in many cases irreparable. This does not comport with our values and is among the most shameful of this administration’s actions.

“As we recently learned, a child died soon after release from a family detention center and the cause of death is being investigated. Detention is no place for children.”
