LAKEHURST, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and U.S. Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer today toured Picatinny Arsenal and Lakehurst Navy Base to highlight the vastly important work being done at both sites. The Secretary’s visit comes in response to Sen. Menendez’s invitation in May to visit both installations to see firsthand the critical national security missions being carried out in New Jersey.

“The operations underway at the Lakehurst Navy Base and Picatinny Arsenal are essential to U.S. national security. Having spent more than four decades in public service, I can tell you that our world is only growing more complex. On the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, we’re grappling with an array of diplomatic, economic, and security challenges around the world,” said Sen. Menendez. “I thank the Secretary for making this trip to Picatinny Arsenal and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst today to see first-hand the vital work underway. I come away inspired by the professionalism and dedication of our men and women in uniform and the civilian workforce who are the backbone of America’s military.”

Picatinny Arsenal houses the Joint Center of Excellence for Guns and Ammunition, supplying weapons and technical support to all branches of the U.S. military, as well as the Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Ordnance Disposal Technology Division's Systems Integration Department’s mission, which handles research, development and acquisition of guns and ammunition for the Navy.

Sen. Menendez and Sec. Spencer toured the Department’s three main divisions: Guns Division; Ammunition Division; and Package Handing, Storage and Transportation Division.

The Aircraft Division at Lakehurst provides full, life-cycle support of naval aviation aircraft, weapons and systems operated by sailors and marines. The Division supports research, development, test, evaluation, engineering and fleet support of Navy and Marine Corps air vehicle systems and trainers.

While at Lakehurst the Senator and Secretary toured the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System; Advanced Arresting Gear System; Expeditionary Airfield; and Aviation Data Management and Control System.

The Joint Base is home to the 87th Air Base Wing, which provides installation management support for 3,933 facilities with an approximate value of $9.3 billion in physical infrastructure. More than 44,000 service members, civilians and their family members live and work on and around the Joint Base, making it the second largest employer in New Jersey, with only state government employing more.

In the 2018 budget, Sen. Menendez secured $11.5 million to support Lakehurst.
