NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez today named Raphael Chavez-Fernandez his new State Director to lead the Senator’s New Jersey offices and staff in Newark and Barrington. Chavez-Fernandez, who served as deputy campaign manager during Menendez’s successful 2018 re-election run, returns to Menendez’s Senate office after spending the past three years working in the private sector.

“Raphael Chavez-Fernandez brings unique talent and savvy to my office as we fight to protect health care, complete the Sandy recovery, and provide every New Jerseyan with access to clean air and water, a quality education, and a good-paying job. He understands both the needs of New Jersey communities and residents, and how to deliver for them,” said Sen. Menendez. “Raphael represents the next generation of leaders in New Jersey, with fresh ideas and a new approach that brings with him a level of excitement and energy to meet the challenges of the day and inspire others. I am thrilled to welcome him back to lead my state offices and to work together on behalf of the people of New Jersey.”

Chavez-Fernandez played an integral role in helping the Senator secure a decisive 2018 victory and a third full-term in the United States Senate. From 2013-2016, he worked as a trusted advisor in the Senator’s Newark office and as his head of Hispanic community outreach. Chavez-Fernandez returns after spending the past three years serving as a senior associate at global public strategy and consulting firm Mercury Public Affairs.

“I’m honored that Senator Menendez has given me this exciting, new opportunity to once again serve the people of my home state of New Jersey,” said incoming State Director Raphael Chavez-Fernandez. “The Senator has fought tirelessly to improve the lives of New Jerseyans. Whether it's fighting to empower the middle class or ensure we have access to quality, affordable health care, he has built a reputation as an effective legislator. I look forward to leading a talented and hardworking staff to achieve the Senator's vision."

Chavez-Fernandez grew up in East Brunswick and currently resides in Essex County. He is a graduate of Rutgers University–New Brunswick, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.
