Menendez Leads Bipartisan Group of NJ Members in Urging President Trump to Approve Disaster Declaration

“While the immediate response by state and local emergency responders was robust and professional, the size and power of the storm created a significant burden on our state’s resources”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) led a bipartisan group of New Jersey Members of Congress in sending a letter to President Trump urging him to approve the Major Disaster Declaration as a result of the severe rain storm that struck New Jersey from August 11, 2018 to August 13, 2018.  The Congressional letter follows the formal request made by Governor Murphy after the storm.

“The severe rain storm that struck New Jersey from August 11, 2018 to August 13, 2018 causes torrential rainfall which resulted in significant flooding,” the Members wrote. “While the immediate response by state and local emergency responders was robust and professional, the size and power of the storm created a significant burden on our state’s resources,” the Members added.

The Members urged President Trump to support Governor Murphy’s request by “issuing a Major Disaster Declaration, granting Individual Assistance for the counties of Bergen, Essex, Ocean, Monmouth, and Passaic and granting Hazard Mitigation assistance statewide.”

Joining Sen. Menendez on the letter were Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and Reps. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-N.J.-09), Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.-05), Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-N.J.-06), Albio Sires (D-N.J.-08), Donald Payne, Jr. (D-N.J.-10), Bonnie Watson-Coleman (D-N.J.-12), Donald Norcross (D-N.J.-01), Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.-11), Chris Smith (R-N.J.-04) and Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.-03).

Dear President Trump:

Governor Murphy has formally requested a Major Disaster Declaration as a result of the severe rain storm event that struck New Jersey from August 11, 2018 to August 13, 2018.  We are writing to urge you to approve this request to ensure New Jersey receives the assistance it needs fully recover from this storm.

The severe rain storm that struck New Jersey from August 11, 2018 to August 13, 2018 caused torrential rainfall which resulted in significant flooding.  Up to 8 inches of rain was estimated to have fallen in the most severely affected regions, forcing state and local authorities to take emergency action.  Dozens of residents were evacuated out of harm’s way and spent the storm residing in a shelter.  In total, 800 homes were damaged by the storm, including 66 that suffered major damage.

While the immediate response by state and local emergency responders was robust and professional, the size and power of this storm, created a significant burden on our state’s resources.  We therefore urge you to support Governor Murphy’s request by issuing a Major Disaster Declaration, granting Individual Assistance for the counties of Bergen, Essex, Ocean, Monmouth, and Passaic and granting Hazard Mitigation assistance statewide.

Thank you for your consideration.  We look forward to a prompt response to our request.

Sincerely,

###
